Leaving Texas always makes me a little sad, yeah, I know - I'll be back...the day started out a little slow as we left Fort Davis and drove over the large hills, which soon became "mountains" as we climbed up and up and over...when out in the middle of 'nowhere' literally,,,a car whizzed by us and told us we had a flat tire...we stopped and sure 'nuf - a flat on the fifth wheel. We were 10 miles south of I-10 on what appeared to be a little traveled highway...Ted started looking up repair\wrecker services on the GPS,,,closest one-at least 40 miles away,,,then over the horizon a TxDot truck appears and informed us that they would change our tire,,,are you kidding me? Then from the other direction a Texas DPS trooper comes up on us and more or less, supervises the 'tire change',,we were there less than 15 minutes total time - honest! The trooper told us we could have called the number on the back of our driver's license and they would have dispatched help to change the tire! The TxDot truck was making their weekly rounds and told us they only came down this particular highway on Mondays and Fridays - the trooper was heading to I-10 and decided to take this highway instead of his normal route,,,I'm thinking someone is watching over us today for sure! Thanks to the TxDot guys and the state trooper...onto New Mexico.
We found the Las Cruces KOA campground and met up with our friends, Kelly and Patty Gilday. They had fired up the 'horno' and pizza was on the menu for the evening meal. We met Kelly and Patty while we were all work camping at Lake Corpus Christi 2 years ago. They continued with their work camping and this is their 2nd season at the Las Cruces KOA. This year Kelly and some of the other work campers built a 'horno'. It is not only a great conversation piece but is very efficient in baking most anything you care to bake. Not only did we have pizza but calzone and peach cobbler. We enjoyed a great evening with our friends and watched the sun set over Las Cruces.
