Port Orford, OR

Main St. Port Orford
This adventure we embarked upon has been full of emotion - mostly on my part..not emotional, well yes I guess emotional....it is also serving as our guidelines to just where we want to settle or hang our hats once we, or shall I say, Ted gets his traveling in..not sure that will ever happen as I do believe his heart is lassoed to a wandering star..I have, on the other hand, resolved that I am not a small city kind of gal..I like my conveniences close by and not an hour away. Yes, this little 'willage' has a grocery store but limited and pricey and what's a gal to do when she can't bargain shop? Restaurants are minimal at most..Paradise Cafe within walking distance - well everything is within walking distance, but Paradise has pretty good food - not much atmosphere but as a local diner you can learn a lot about the town...Griff's On The Dock - seafood fresh from the boats,,tasty and again lacking in ambiance...Crazy Norwegian...good fish and chips as that is all I have eaten there but Griff's has them beat on the fish part...Hard Rain Cafe boasts about their pizza,,,we both knew we shouldn't eat any pizza other than Papa Murphy's but we tried it and both suffered the next day - nevermore...there are 2 more places that we have not tried out - and yep, you got it - there are six restaurants...there is also a movie theatre on main street that we have yet to visit and probably won't as Ted is not too keen on indoor movie theatres - he waits until movies are out on DVD.
Post office is closed for lunch each day and of course the only day I visited was lunch time~no pharmacy or drug store~Ace hardware store is where you buy a fishing license and an assortment of many things from seedlings to space heaters ~ this RV park is across the street from the City Office housing local PD and FD and the noon siren...each and every day the siren is blown at noon ~ just happy it's not the tsunami siren - did I mention we are in the tsunami hazard zone - but don't worry - the exit route is only 2 streets over and up the mountain~ I think if one enjoys the small town atmosphere and really cool weather and wind most of the time this is your place ... I have a count down to when we leave on the 15th and head north to Seattle...this is one place that I will definitely scratch off my list - been there - done that~
The opinions expressed on this blog are the personal opinions of Beth, and in no way reflect the opinions of Ted ~ I felt it necessary to add my disclaimer as Ted likes it here in Port Orford - reasons unknown to me ~but he is an easy guy to please and tells me I am 'high maintenance' ~

  1. Well probably none of us would have known about this "quaint" willage without your adventure. Crossed off my list too! LOL

  2. Hi Beth,

I'm with you on small townville. I thought I would like the small town life and moved to Longview, Texas from the Denver, CO area in '92. Boy was I wrong ... Granted Longview had a few more than 6 restaurants and it had a medium size mall. What I couldn't get used to were the people (not all, but most) no desire to better themselves ... "I didn't graduate from the 6th grade and I'm darn proud of it". "If I get fired from this $6.00/hour job who cares, I can get another just down the road."
My wife (Patsy) and I, like Ted, have the wonderlust! Have not been to Oregon yet - suppose to be pretty on the coast. Have been to Seattle and even managed to hit it on the two days of sunshine it has each year. Was pretty, but also not my cup of tea.
Our wonderlust is in the form of Space-A travel with the military. We find it exciting to plan a trip to Germany and wind up in Rota, Spain or Sigonella, Sicily (Italy). Also know not everyone can handle the uncertainty of where they are going to be bedding down once they get to where ever they end up arriving.
We are going to do a road trip to the Wisconsin Dells over the 4th of July (I grew up in West Allis, WI just outside of Milwaukee) and Paty having grown up in East Texas has never been to Wisconsin - she wasn't too keen on going but when I landed a condo for 299.00 a week she relented. She will have fun (I told her if she doesn't it is a long walk back to Dallas (joking, of course)). Tell Ted I said "Hey".
