Eureka, CA to Port Orford, OR

Crossing the Chetco River

along Highway 101

come closer,,I'll grant your wish...

The brick crosswalks, iron benches and Victorian architecture grace the old town Eureka and makes it quite charming...cold, but charming! Ted claims I under dress as a ploy for new clothes, but it seems to work and I did buy a fleece-lined "life is good" hoodie on sale! We also enjoyed lunch at the Samoa Cookhouse on Woodley Island, one of three natural islands in Humboldt Bay, and the cookhouse being the last surviving cookhouse in the West...continuing the tradition of serving lots of good food - lumber camp style...with red and white oil cloth covered tables stretching the width of the room and dishes stacked at each place setting ready to serve up the meal 'family style'...it was certainly a step back in time and a delicious meal as well...

Leaving Eureka in the foggy morning and no Internet signal prompted me to journal old style - paper and pen in hand...one notices the many road signs~~ the first being "Tsunami Hazard Zone",,hmmm? We traveled in and out of the fog and Tsunami Hazard Zones and into the Redwood Forest along the Redwood Highway - so I tightened my seat belt and prepared to steady my pen for "Sharp Curves Next 8 Miles"...followed by "Brake Check"....then "7% Grade"..."6% Grade".."Report Drunk Drivers" [lord I hope there aren't any drunk drivers on these roads]...then after crossing the Oregon state line we cross the "Highest Bridge in Oregon"..not to mention the numerous "Slower Traffic Keep Right" and thankfully to the motorists who get stuck behind us the "Passing Lane Ahead" ....regretfully followed by "Right Lane Ends"...passing through Gold Beach couldn't help but notice "Dog Bakery & Holistic Pet Nutrition"..huh? just checking to see if you are paying attention and reading.. .....climbing back up into the coastal mountains.."High Winds" [they are always a joy]...."Slides" [just slides? what kind of slides? rock, mud, children's?]..."Rocks"..."Road Narrows" [these are always a challenge as well]..."Elk" [this one I compared to ones in Texas that state "Deer Crossing" - although it just said "ELK" and I never did see any Elk]...now we have "Wind Gusts Next 6 Miles" just in case one is bored by the "High Winds" or "Road Narrows".......don't get me wrong as Highway 101 along the coast has it's moments and beautiful if not magnificent scenery...we shall go back without the land yacht behind us to actually enjoy the scenery now that we are planted for a spell.....there's no place like home,,,there's no place like home,,there's no place like home,,,clik, clik, clik........
